EDITORIAL 2006

20th August 2006

Thin Lizzy - A Rock Legend. 4 Years old! (by Dan Donnelly),.

When we launched Rock Legend in 2002, we intended that the "Editorial" would be used to pass comment on events in the Lizzy world (as opposed to the factual reporting on the News page) and also as a place where guest writers could provide articles. Like many good ideas, it didn't really take off as a regular feature. It has mainly been used as a way of summarising the state of Rock Legend each August. Well, and as Rock Legend reaches its 4th birthday and is about to move into a new era, it's a good time to continue that tradition.

So, how are we doing? Well, we thought things were going well last year with these stats:

so I guess we should be very happy with this years figures! Comparing the same time period with last year, you can see that there are twice as many sessions per day (and session times are longer) and about three times the data-transfer rate.

The three people actively involved in running the forum on Rock Legend (Davey Murphy, Paul O'Connell and myself) are all stepping down from active duty. I am also passing on webmaster and hosting control of the main site. Jim Cameron is suspending his role on the news page until the new managment situation becomes clear. Since this is a site owned by the fans that use it, and not by anyone else, the three of us have all agreed that the way forward is to allow the users to elect three individuals to take over the site. A one month self-nomination process was started on August 10th. On September 11th, the list of all self-nominated candidates will be published and, if necessary, an election will be held by forum members to choose the team of 3. If an election is necessary, time will be given for the candidates to set out their vision and answer any questions. Rock Legend can then continue with a clear mandate from its users.

Rock Legend is still serving its purpose well (see "last year's editorial for the definition) but it's now time for new blood to take it to the next stage. Apart from a couple of months time-out in late 2002, I've been on the RL scene for the duration of the 4 years and have been at the sharp end since April 2003. Some of the journey has been very rocky but seeing the growing success of the site has been fantastic. And I look forward to seeing it get better and better. It's been an absolute pleasure working with Davey, Paul and Jim - you couldn't meet a nicer bunch of people anywhere. Thanks too to the others folk I've worked alongside - it's not always been easy but it has been worthwhile - and also to the great people I've met on the forum over the years.

Take Care,
Dan
