6th December 2004

Ninteen @ 19th Vibe

6th December 2004

Nineteen have been confirmed to appear at the Vibe 2005

The band will feature:

Laurence Archer (Grand Slam, UFO, Stampede, Wild Horses) – Guitar
Mark Kirkland (Laurence Archer’s Grand Slam) – Guitar
Jon Stone (Laurence Archer’s Grand Slam) – Vocals
Jo Burt (Black Sabbath, Freddie Mercury, Brian Setzer, Virginia Wolf) – Bass
Simon Jeffrey (Laurence Archer’s Grand Slam, Bernie Torme) - Drums

Nineteen will also be joined by special guest Robbie Brennan (Skid Row, Grand Slam) and will play a selection of Grand Slam songs as well as other Lynott material that was incorporated into the original Grand Slam set. They will also play some acoustic numbers at the Pre-Vibe.

Jo Burt has a great rock'n'roll pedigree, having played with some of the biggest names in the business. While on tour with the Tom Robinson Band in Dublin, Jo was approached after the show by a young Adam Clayton asking Jo if he could pass his demo tape to Steve Lillywhite (Tom Robinson’s producer at the time) "I'll do better than that, he is backstage I'll introduce you to him" replied Jo. And so Steve Lillywhite came to produce the first U2 album and the rest is history!

Rock Legend domain name

1st November 2004

I've given up on being able to get www.thin-lizzy.net back as our main domain name. It's owned by the original web designer Dave Hirst, despite a couple of requests via 'phone since the big server crash, I've had no luck in getting the domain pointed back at Rock Legend.

Since I own www.thin-lizzy.com, I think we'll just have to settle with that as the official domain name ... please let me know if you spot any links to the old .net name.

Cheers,

Dan

The following is from Mark Blake, Editor-In-Chief of Q, Mojo, Kerrang! Special Editions.

"I am writing on behalf of Q and Mojo, the monthly UK music magazines. We have just produced a one-off special edition entitled The Greatest Classic Rock Albums Ever.

This features a piece on Lizzy's Live And Dangerous, plus an in-depth feature on the band's glory years alongside 10 Thin Lizzy Songs To Make Your Life Better. Any chance we could get a mention of this on your excellent website?"

Server Problems!

23rd September, UPDATED 1st October 2004

We're having a severe server nightmare! The main server is down and www.thin-lizzy.net doesn't work. So, we've loaded the site here on a different sever and pointed www.thin-lizzy.com at it - we hope to soon get www.thin-lizzy.net pointing there too but the domain name is owned by the original RL webmaster who is out of email contact at present.

Also our forum server in Florida has also been down too due to hurricane damage! We are trying to move the forum to the new server too - the URL should become www.forum.thin-lizzy.com. The problem is we cannot access the original messages and usernames until the hurricane damage has been sorted.

20th September 2004

Check out the Vibe for Philo Site for an early announcment of the Jan 2005 Vibe. Some of the info is repeated below...

Rumours are certainly flying, but it looks pretty certain that Renegade will be the 2005 Vibe theme... Tickets will almost certainly be available online (as has been the case in recent years) and we'll give as much notice as possible when you can get them. Likewise, the ever popular Picture Tickets will be available from selected outlets nationwide!

For the moment, however, set-lists, performers, venues and the huge amount of background work involved in staging the Vibe is under way and we look forward to letting you be the first to know what's happening as it's confirmed.

Living with the NME
7th September 2004

Following on from the sins of their past, when they turned against Lizzy and Lynott, NME have now seen the light (and £s) and have included Thin Lizzy in a special release. No idea at this stage how much Thin Lizzy is included or whether it will be in their usual vein. This is from their editor .....

Following the infamous volumes on Glam!, Swinging London in the 1960’s, Punk and The Beatles comes NME ORIGINALS: GODS OF ROCK -

148 pages packed with some of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll stories ever, reprinted from the archives of NME and its sister publication, Melody Maker.

Full of rare photos and salacious interviews, GODS OF ROCK includes Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zandt telling you how to stomp a guy half to death in a barroom brawl, Ted Nugent insisting that "Anyone who digs adventurous music would get off sleeping in a dead sheep", and Ozzy Osbourne getting arrested for pissing on the Alamo. Freddie Mercury boasts that his slacks are so tight that one lady writer rightly guessed his religion, Axl Rose does his damnedest to get a riot going, Perry Farrell shows you videos of himself shooting up and Lemmy claims to be a "reincarnated Nazi."

Johnny Rotten gets beaten up by the cops, Eddie Van Halen pummels a wall until his knuckles bleed, Kurt Cobain denies doing smack, Johnny Thunders chucks up on the tarmac at Paris Airport, Slipknot punch each other in the face, Stevie Nicks refers to cocaine as a little more-ish, like Sarah Lee Cheese Cake and Courtney Love is dragged screaming and kicking from somebody else’s stage.

Featuring Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, The Cult, The Runaways, New York Dolls and many, many more, NME ORIGINALS: GODS OF ROCK is the most lairy, lewd, ludicrous and life-affirming read on the planet.

On sale now: £5.50.

Happy Birthday Phillip Lynott & Rock Legend!
20th August 2004

As we start Year 3 of Rock Legend, we'd like to pay our respects to the man responsible for it all!

Happy Birthday Philo!!

To celebrate two full years of RL, Nick has written a new editorial - check it out via the News sub-menu on the main page. We've also clarified the credits and contributions to the site on the Who We Are link, so now you (and your lawyers - arf arf) know who really is behind all this.

Also, look out for yet another new forum - we returned to the original VOY forum when our new home was taken away ... but VOY is just a just a temporary home while we get something better sorted out. And it's on its way!

Live And Dangerous - On Top Again!
4th August 2004

Following the controversy over the critics' choice of their 50 Greatest Live Albums Ever, Classic Rock magazine re-conducted the poll but this time they asked their readers - the fans! The September 2004 issue contains the results.

The great news is that Live And Dangerous comes out on top again! This is a fantastic achievement! Okay we already knew it was the best ... but what a result to top both polls! It is absolutely brilliant to see Lizzy get the respect and acclaim they have always deserved after they've been away so long. Yet again Thin Lizzy grace the cover with a great shot of Philip and the write-up of the album is a treat to read and well worth the cover price alone.

And there's more ..... there's an eight page feature extracted from Alan Byrne's book Thin Lizzy - Soldiers Of Fortune graced with some great and unseen (to these eyes) photos. Okay some grumblings on this site's Forum that it is a straight lift from the book rather than a proper new article but this is still a must have.

Footnote : Alan told me he was doing something for Classic Rock and I thought "Aye, I'll believe that when I see it!". Well b*gger me!

Any of our overseas readers who want a copy contact Phil at [email protected] as my new local, round the corner 24 hour Tesco's, now stocks it. You'll have to pay for it and p&p; mind :-)

Thin Lizzy Forever - The Preview
12th July 2004

Latest news from Jörgen Holmstedt about the Thin Lizzy Forever Documentary .....

Dear Lizzy fans,

It's been two years since I, Jovan Radomir and Gerhard Malmberg started work on the documentary Thin Lizzy Forever.

We are delighted to tell you that there will be a preview of some of the material on Sweden's main TV station SVT 07.35 CET on Saturday the 17 July. It's part of the massive music show Hårdrocknatt (Hard Rock Night) which will run for 12 hours starting the previous evening. The Thin Lizzy Special, as this 45 minute thing will be called, features videos of the band with bits and pieces from our interviews with Brian Downey (done in Dublin 2004 04 23) and Scott Gorham (Stockholm Spring 2003). This way we will get our fave band on TV twice.

And the real thing? You'll have to wait a little longer. But it's gonna be good, I promise you.

Rock hard,

Jörgen, Jovan and Gerhard.

New Plaque
2nd July 2004

Dawn McCarrick from the Roisin Dubh Trust has sent us a photo of the new plaque .....

This is how the new plaque to replace the one stolen from Philip's grave looks. The image has been laser etched onto marble. Philomena is still wary of putting it on the grave and considering yesterday's awful news it may be wise not to as these despicable people are aware the first one was stolen.

Robbo News ....
29th June 2004

Some news from Sören....

Hi!

Robbo is featured on the new Five Fifteen CD The Man Who Sold Himself from Ranch Records(Ranch-26 982049-3). He plays on Jesus Went To N.Y.C.(Again) and Rocking Horse.

We've just finished recording 6 new songs for his next project which won't be called The Clan (as previous reported) due to the fact that it's musically too far away from The Clan or what you would expect from Robbo. The working title is Yodel! at the moment and it's inspired by The Darkness, Ash, Jim White, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle and many others. Guests includes Rob Lamothe (who also co-wrote 3 songs), Fredrik Akesson (Talisman), Hakan Persson (Skintrade) and jazz guitar player Andreas Pettersson. The recording was done in Das Boot Studios in Stockholm.

On July 11th Robbo will guest with Ash at the Oxegen festival in Ireland and a European tour with Five Fifteen will follow later in the autumn. There's been talks about collaborations with Dead Men Walking (Kirk Brandon) and the reformed Grand Slam.

All the best and enjoy your summer holidays!

Alan Byrne’s Book – Thin Lizzy - Soldiers Of Fortune
26th May 2004

The first copies of Alan's book came through letterboxes yesterday.

At last the book is with us!

We look forward to hearing your views on the web board.

Phil: Still haven’t had time to sit down with mine.

Dan: Where the hell is mine! :(

"Thin Lizzy were the original punks. To be honest, the punks just tagged onto us. I went over with a bottle of Johnny Walker in one hand and had Johnny Rotten by the other. I said "punk, you're no fucking punk."

To be honest if they had come up to us with the "fuck everything" attitude we'd have just nutted them and they knew it."

Brian Robertson

"Thin Lizzy was a band that lived life to the full. In their heyday they mixed lilting celtic melodies with a rock'n'roll edge and had a reputation as one of the seventies best live acts – as exemplified on the multi-platinum Live And Dangerous album. A hard drinking, drug taking, lady-killer gang, they went on the rampage across the world's stages, often blowing away the opposition in the process.

Phil Lynott's six foot plus wiry frame and the label of the only black man in Dublin ensured that he stood out from the crowd. Thin Lizzy soon became the vehicle for him to play a range of characters – the vagabond, the romeo, the streetfighter, the reckless lover.

Backed by some of the best heavy rockers – Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and the transient Gary Moore Lynott was the archetypal rock'n'roll rebel. In many ways a hopeless romantic, Lynott was a man of many contradictions, but he crafted some of the seventies greatest pop songs. Sometimes sensitive, sometimes bullying and arrogant, his workaholic tendencies often drove himself and those around him beyond the limit.

In January 1986 Lynott finally succumbed to the lifestyle he had so doggedly clung onto. His reluctance to abandon the recklessness that haunted many of the characters in his songs finally meant the difference between life and death. What emerges is the portrait documenting the rise and fall of the wild men of rock, whilst never losing sight of the lyricism inherent in Lynott’s Irish roots."

Inside Thin Lizzy 1970 - 1984 (sic) DVD
17th May (Update 25th May) 2004

They Say: "This is the first complete critical review of the glory years when the late, great Phil Lynott led the band and features a survey of the band’s work from the first album through to Lynott’s swansong Thunder And Lightning."

Nothing about this release on the classicrockproduction website but we have emailed them asking for information.

UPDATE 25th May

Thanks for the e-mail. Here is a brief overview of the DVD. It runs for 70mins and covers some 13 albums from Thin Lizzy to Thunder & Lightning. There are some 30 tracks featured though not all are played in their entirety. As you would expect the classics The Rocker, The Boys Are Back, Whiskey In The Jar, Jailbreak etc are there. there are interviews with Phil, including a rare interview with him on the Australian tour.

Footage of the Bands appearance on The Tube playing Boys, Cold Sweat, Sun Goes Down, as well as the time they played Sydney Opera House and Gary Moore was with them. All in all a great product which we are sure you will agree. It will be shown on the website next week.

Kind regards

News from the Robbo Camp
21st May 2004

News from Sören....

Just a brief info about what's going on in our camp...we've just finished mixing a song for the forthcoming documentary Thin Lizzy Forever!, recorded a new song with The Darkness in mind and also recorded 4 new songs(3 co-written by Rob Lamothe) for a forthcoming Robbo CD.

We're doing a B.B. King Tribute in Stockholm, Sweden sunday 23/5 and the Oxygen Festival in Ireland with Ash, The Darkness and David Bowie the 10th of july.

Some people have asked about Robbo's sound on the Live And Dangerous album and the simple truth is a bloody good guitar, a great player, Marshall 100's with reverb, Marshall 4x12's, a wahwah-pedal, attitude and lots of whisky!

There's also been questions about Robbo playing with Motörhead in the future and that's not going to happen ... Robbo loves the album he recorded with the band, but not anything else from that period! Neither does Lemmy, by the way! He's played Rock It live with Five Fifteen at several gigs and like I said before, he's not ashamed of any of the songs he recorded with the band, but he never wished to be a member of the band and in hindsight maybe he should have passed the offer down.

All the best,

Sören Lindberg

Thin Lizzy Forever
4th May 2004

More from Jörgen Holmstedt on the exciting project that we featured earlier.....

Dear Lizzy supporters,

Just got back from Dublin where me, Jovan Radomir (my excellent 'co-pilot' on this project) and Gerhard Malmberg (top photographer and crystal clear sound tech) did the Irish part of the Thin Lizzy Forever documentary.

I'm happy to report it was a complete success. We met up with Brian Downey, Jim Fitzpatrick, Philomena Lynott and one more person, very close to the Lynott family, who has previously never given an interview. Especially the Brian Downey part turned out very interesting. The generous and ever so kind drummer spent eight hours with us doing something which has never been done before when it comes to all things Lizzy.

In a few weeks time we are gonna have a meeting to see what remains to be done. Right now we are quite exhausted and must do our normal jobs for a while. There are still a few things up in the air which we are waiting for to happen. Then it's the editing job, which is gonna be difficult considering we have about 15 hours of material which will have to be slimmed down to an hour. But that's gonna be one fantastic if not magic hour.

When will we get to see it, I hear you cry? Sorry, but I really can't say. We've been working in this thing in our spare time for almost two years now, financing it ourselves. From the beginning it was supposed to be just a 30 minute programme with Robbo saying a few things inbetween some Lizzy music (See the photo by Poke Industries, taken during the making of the docu). Then one thing led to the other and now we will not stop until we think we have the best possible docu we can produce.

Like with everything else I've done regarding Lizzy over the last 25 years (the fan club, the fanzines, the compilation albums, the radio docu, the articles etc), this is turning into an obsession, I tell ya!

Besides there is no reason to hurry. That's the beauty of working independent, there is no boss or company demanding you to deliver on a deadline. We work until we are satisfied. But sometime between August till December is a good guess. Fingers crossed. Me, Jovan and Gerhard would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Downey, Jim Fitzpatrick, Philomena Lynott and everybody else in Dublin for taking the time out to turn our ideas and dreams into reality when it comes to the Thin Lizzy Forever documentary.

Rock hard,

Jörgen

P.S. I will personally reward the person who can supply me with a clean video copy of Cowboy Song which was left over from the Live And Dangerous live video but used for promotion. I desperately need if for the docu.

Please send it to me and I will make you a happy Lizzy fan indeed:

Jörgen Holmstedt,
Barnängsgatan 30, III tr
SE -116 41 Stockholm
SWEDEN

Also, if any of you fans out there has anything else you'd like to be considered for inclusion in this docu (pics, videos etc), send it to me and I promise you we will take serious look at it. If we use any stuff the fans send us, like a useable copy of the Cowboy Song video, they will be credited in the film.

I'll be back with another report in a few months time.

Dare: Update From Melodicrock.com
19th April 2004

News from melodicrock.com:

"I thought it time to catch up with Dare frontman Darren Wharton for a quick chat about the band's new album Beneath The Shining Water. The album is due out in Europe through MTM Music June 7, with a preview song Sea Of Roses currently available.

I caught Darren in the midst of the final mix - the very last track to be done in fact. He describes the album as a mix of Out Of The Silence and Calm Before The Storm and definitely rockier than the band's last album Belief. But don't expect anything like Blood From Stone.

Darren is adamant he won't record anything as heavy as that again. The album features a couple of very radio friendly tracks which Darren hopes will catch the attention of radio programmers in the UK, just as White Horses did from Belief. The rest of the album is a little darker and moodier. And Darren also apologizes for the lack of Dare website updates. He has been "killing himself" getting Beneath The Shining Water completed and hopes to spend a little more time on the web soon. So don't forget the album is due out June 7 and Dare will appear live at a few European festivals over the summer, including the Deep Impact Open Air Festival in Munich, July 24! (www.deep-impact2004.de)."

Some Robbo news from Record Collector – January 2004

Statetrooper – Statetrooper
Catalogue Number: Escape ESM 095

After singer Gary Barden left the Michael Schenker Group at the peak of it’s powers, he dipped out of sight until 1986, re-emerging in a new six-piece, yet still trading in similar melodic rock goods. It’s taken ‘til now to get hold of the 9 track CD set, boosted by half a dozen bonus cuts – two demos from sessions with Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson and four live in the studio takes.

*** Sören Lindberg (Robbo's Manager) later confirmed that Robbo had not in fact recorded any material with Statetrooper. ***

Thin Lizzy Forever
27th January 2004

More on the exciting news from Jörgen Holmstedt that we featured earlier.....

Hi all! An update on the Swedish TV documentary Thin Lizzy Forever here. The last thing we’ve done is an interview with John Sykes when he recently was in Stockholm to play with Scott Gorham. That means we now have interviewed the following people: Sykes, Gorham, Eric Bell, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson (twice), Jimmy Bain, Don Airey, John Norum, Ian Haugland and Jan Johansen. They all say some very interesting things.

As you might know, Robertson/Norum/Haugland/Johansen are performing the song Don’t Believe A Word in this film. I’ll think we will end the whole thing with that.

Hopefully me and the rest of our small team (the other two guys being Swedish TV personality Jovan Radomir and camera/light/sound man Gerhard Malmberg) will be off to Dublin in the Spring to meet a few people. Then we are going to interview a few more Swedish people as this documentary will have a Swedish angle. That doesn’t mean it will not be of interest to all you non-Swedish people, as most folks in this 60 minute film will be talking in English anyway.

We are aiming at having finished product in August, but this could be subject to delay as we are financing this ourselves and basically doing it whenever we have time off or some Lizzy related person is in town.

That’s all for now. I’ll get back with more info in a few months, OK?

Rock hard,

Jörgen Holmstedt

Cold Sweat in Finland
27th January 2004

Jari Salonen from Finland has sent us a copy of his Thin Lizzy tribute band’s great recordings of Cold Sweat and the Cowboy Song. The band are also called Cold Sweat. Very accomplished musicians they are too, they do a fine job. Both songs while not straying too far from the originals feature some very inventive guitar work and a solid rhythm section. The vocals are strong too and do not try and replicate Phil.

I met Jari at the Vibe and he said that they hoped to play it in the future, I for one would look forward to that.

New Year - New Editorial - New Vibe
5th January 2004

Phil O has posted a review of 2003 in the editorial section ....

Hope you all had time to spare a thought yesterday for the one and only Phillip Lynott on the 18th anniversary of his untimely death. Of course, I'd like to have been at the Vibe but instead I stayed at home and played a few songs on the old geetar.

Hopefully we'll have some news on the Vibe to post sometime soon ... as Rock Legend's very own Phil O was there. ;-)

Happy New Year everyone!
