Are
You Ready To Dance?
We're in a recession. So ... in a nostalgic nod to the last one, and heady nights in McGonagles, The New Inn, Morans Hotel, and the Garden-shed in Collins Avenue, the Smile-meister has dusted down the twin-decks, and will rock the 26th Vibe with another of those legendary sets lovingly preserved on the b-side of The Boomtown Rats 'Looking After Number One'.
Channeling 'the spirits of James Brown and James Joyce', Mick Pyro's Republic of Loose have been admired by everyone from Snow Patrol to Sinead O'Connor and U2. The super radio friendly funksters have won numerous awards and promise something special and poignant for this years show. Former Bogey Boy and Grand-Slammer Doish Nagle brought us to tears with an emotional acoustic set a few years ago. Now he's back with a full-on electric show. If your ready, he's ready. Not to be missed.
Matt Wilson and Phil Edgar, personify the best of the current Norn' Iron' Indie scene. Together they are known to vibe regulars for their blistering, heart-rending, loving, interpretations of Philo's legacy. Matt's driving the agenda this year, so expect something surprising and left of field, which will probably steal the show, yet again.
'Legends' according to John Rodgers, The Thin Lizzy Experience, make grown men weep and pubescent girls react like they did when Philo treaded the boards. They have the lights, the pyrotechnics, the shapes, and a Philo look-alike who'll make you feel like you just walked into the Old Town video.
'Television Screen' launched the Punk Wars in Ireland and 'Faithful Departed' put Philip Chevron into the pantheon of Irish Singer-songwriters. Individually several of the Radiators (From Space) have played The Vibe, including the first one 26 years ago. This year, after several attempts and near misses, the boys will finally make their collective Vibe debut. Anyone for smashing a telecaster?
Are you Ready – the 26th Vibe For Philo takes place at The Button Factory on the 4th January 2012. The Pre-Vibe takes place at Whelans, Wexford Street on the 3rd January 2012. Afro wigs and look-alike costumes are optional.

Fighting My Way Back: Thin Lizzy 69-76 - by Martin Popoff |

Dublin's Thin Lizzy have become one of the most revered cult acts of all time, studious and discerning fans of hard rock the world over reveling in the storytelling acumen of the legendary Philip Lynott and the craft and class of his band. Fighting My Way Back: Thin Lizzy 69 – 76, through numerous new interviews with most of the principles involved and a mountain of painstaking research, examines the band’s suite of six records culminating in 1976’s superlative and sparkling Jailbreak, home of such hits as Cowboy Song, Emerald, Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back In Town. Thin Lizzy, Shades Of A Blue Orphanage, Vagabonds Of The Western World, Nightlife, Fighting and then momentously Jailbreak … along the way, alcohol and drugs wreak havoc between band members, producers and managers, but despite line-up changes and a mostly grinding, rockscrabble existence, Ireland’s favourite sons persevere to experience, finally, the smash hit record they’d deserved for so long.
Immerse yourself in Popoff’s celebrated record-by-record methodology and emerge a rejuvenated Lizzy fan, newly appreciative of the deep album tracks hiding within this singular band’s often forgotten early years …
The book’s 280 pages include 328 rare, archival black & white photos and memorabilia shots to accompany my usual in-depth track-by-track play-by-play type o’ crazy biog.
Fresh new interviews for this book included (and most a few times), Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, Gary Moore and Brian Robertson along with a couple of managers in Terry O’Neill and Ted Carroll, producers Nick Tauber and Ron Nevison, Nigel Grange from Vertigo, Frank Murray who kept it all together on the road, cover artist Jim Fitzpatrick, and a range of others. As well, historical press interviews helped bring out the real Phil in all his dastardly guises. OK, the usual … books will be signed by me to you, so please make clear if it’s a Christmas present. Price including shipping: US orders: $34.00 US funds International orders (all books go air): $45.00 Cdn. funds Canadian orders: $38.00 Cdn. funds PayPal happily accepted! Ask me if you’d like a PayPal invoice (please indicate what country you are in), or just do yer usual and direct funds to [email protected] Or mail payment (personal check in US funds, cash, or INTERNATIONAL money order), to: Martin Popoff P.O. Thin Lizzy At The BBC Box Set |

'This incredible archive represents a great set of previously unreleased recordings in the Lizzy catalogue. The collection has been brought together by trawling the BBC archives, but also by inviting contributions from fans. The BBC had a habit of wiping tapes after they were broadcast which has meant that some of the Corporation’s output has been lost forever. However thanks to fans recording broadcasts at home a couple of gems have been reclaimed here for this set.
This collection brings together a raft of sessions and live recordings from throughout the band’s career. Included also is a DVD of the bands sought after appearances on Top of the Pops and the Old Grey Whistle Test a well as concerts from throughout the band’s career. This is a first for the band as these recordings have never been available in one place before. With comprehensive notes by Classic Rock’s Malcolm Dome who tells the story of the bands history at the BBC'.

The Philip Lynott Exhibition returns! |
|
5th July 2011 |
|
The Philip Lynott Exhibition returns to the Stephen's Green Shopping Centre in Dublin for a second run, beginning on Wednesday 6th July ...
|
||||||
|
|
||||||
|
The highly acclaimed exhibition, which brought visitors to Dublin from all over the world since it opened in March, will now run through the months of July and August, with a programme of events being lined up to bring additional fun and entertainment to the run. Full details will be announced over the coming weeks. The exhibition is being supported by Dublin's Radio Nova (100.3 FM), who were instrumental in the decision to re-open the exhibition.
"It really is a fantastic exhibition," Radio Nova chief executive Kevin Branigan commented. "Philip Lynott and Thin Lizzy are such an extraordinary Irish rock legend, so it is brilliant to see their career celebrated in this way. Some of the personal material from Philip's childhood, the hand-written song lyrics and so on are stunning." "All of the presenters here at Nova are very excited about it," he added. "Among all the great Irish bands, Thin Lizzy stand out as being especially important to Radio Nova and to its listenership, so it is a great privilege for us to be involved in this amazing celebration of the band and their legacy." The run will encompass Philip Lynott's birthday, on August 20, when a special Samba Band tribute is already planned for the city. "A lot of people will come to Dublin to catch the exhibition over the summer, and especially around Philip's birthday".
Mark Hogan of Hot Press said. "The exhibition was so positively received by everyone who attended that we have continued to get emails and requests from overseas, asking us about getting to see it. It is something that we want to share with the wider community of Thin Lizzy Fans, all over Ireland - and indeed all over the world - so it is great to be able to work with Radio Nova to make this happen." The Philip Lynott Exhibition will return to The Stephen's Green Shopping Centre in Dublin from July 6th until August 31st 2011.

Legendary guitarist Brian Robertson signs with SPV/Steamhammer - New Solo Album due out in March 2011
It's not for the first time in the history of rock music that coincidence led to the discovery of hidden treasures: a carrier bag full of music tapes (note: tapes!) turned out to be the basis for DIAMONDS AND DIRT, the first solo release by Scottish guitarist/composer Brian Robertson, due to be released on 28 March 2026 (Germany: 25 March; US/Canada: April 5th) on Steamhammer/SPV.
'I thrust the bag into my friend Sören's hand and said: 'Why don’t you listen to these some time when you're bored. They're a number of my previously unreleased compositions'. - Robbo
Sören Lindberg happens to be one of former Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson’s closest friends. He had plenty of time to listen to that pile of tapes in his lorry on the way back to Scandinavia. Robertson remembers 'he called me as soon as he reached Stockholm: ‘Brian, there’s some brilliant stuff on those tapes. We should make an album of them'.
Lindberg already had a number of musicians in mind: he enlisted two of his country's most renowned instrumentalists, in drummer Ian Haugland (Europe) and bassist Nalley Påhlsson (Treat).
Robertson: 'They’re great, the best rhythm section I've played with since Phil Lynott and Brian Downey'.
Leif Sundin (ex-Michael Schenker Group) was recruited as an additional vocalist, and the amazing Liny Wood joined the fold as backing vocalist. 'It wasn't easy to get all these extremely sought after musicians in one place at the same time, which is why the work on DIAMONDS AND DIRT took longer than originally scheduled. But it was important to us to get the best possible line-up, so we preferred to wait until they could all be there'. - Robbo

|
|
The result is a superb album at the interface of hard rock with definite blues elements. Gritty, mainstream, wonderfully melodic and full of excellent guitar arrangements. In terms of composition, the album presents a number of outstanding Robertson numbers, such as the driving title track, the truly intense Passion.
Texas Wind with it's wonderfully atmospheric beginning, and the powerful Devil In My Soul with its awesome wah-wah guitar solo. The album is rounded off by tracks from Robertson's extremely successful collaboration with Philip Lynott during their Thin Lizzy days in the years 1974 to 1978, and his fellow-countryman Frankie Miller, with whom he recorded DANCING IN THE RAIN in 1986.
'I think Philip would be proud of what I've done with those Lizzy songs' says Robertson. 'My guitar style is audibly stronger than it was back then when we admittedly still sounded a little wooden'.
Robertson is referring mainly to It's Only Money - from the 1974 recording of NIGHTLIFE. The up until now unreleased Robertson/Lynott co-composition 'Blues Boy' and the Lizzy track Running Back (from the JAILBREAK album) present Robertson as an impressive instrumentalist. Coincidentally, the track has been recorded in two versions: 'I said to Sören: 'Let’s cut it the way I hear that number'. So we tried several interpretations, among them a slower version, which we've also included on the album'. The three Frankie Miller numbers - Mail Box, Do It Till We Drop (Drop It!) and Ain’t Got No Money - sound equally accomplished. To keep Miller happy, former Riverdogs front-man, Rob Lamothe, was enlisted to record the latter. Robbo: 'I played the first version to Frankie, but he didn't like my vocals. So we asked Rob to sing the number. Frankie was very pleased with the result'. And rightly so.

The album, with it's top-notch production, courtesy of Robertson, Sören Lindberg and Chris Laney, fascinates from the first listen to the very last note. We can only hope that we will get an opportunity to see this illustrious line-up live on stage.
'For organizational reasons, I have my doubts that it will be possible to get these musicians together for a full tour, but who knows: we may always turn up for a number of festival gigs this summer. I’m sure we'd all enjoy that. So hopefully, would the audience'. Sören Lindberg

The latest (February 2011) edition of Classic Rock features Philip Lynott on the front cover and contains a major, 12 page article, written by Harry Doherty on 'Phil Lynott's Last Year'.
"25 years after his death, we look back at the Thin Lizzy man's tragic final year. In the final year of his life, Phil Lynott struggled to get his career back on track - he forgot to get his life back on track too. Harry Doherty looks back over a year of bad drugs, crazy deals and lost passports. PLUS: Eric Bell on the first and last time he met Lynott. Scott Gorham and Joe Elliott on remixing Lizzy. And the stolen Lynott tracks traded by a secret group of collectors".
