Robbo - The Return | |
| 12 February 2008 | |
|
|
|
|
We received some great news from Sören Lindberg earlier this month – Robbo is back in the recording studio!
With Ulf Larsson behind the desk initially, at Polar Studios Brian Robertson was recording with Ian Haugland and Nalle Pahlsson on drums and bass respectively. The recordings took place during a short break from gigging, Ian Haugland with Europe and Nalle Pahlsson with Tomas Ledin.
| |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
Sören told us: "The
first session is now complete and we've got three tracks recorded. The
next session is not yet scheduled, but it should take place during this
Winter or early Spring. The songs recorded so far are Do It Till We
Drop (Miller/Robertson), Blues Boy (Lynott/Robertson) and Linger
My Love (Karlsson/Robertson) with a line-up consisting of Robbo on
guitars and vocals, Sulo - lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Ian Haugland -
drums and percussion, Nalle Pahlsson - bass and Linéa Helgé on backing
vocals. Recording took place at Polar Studios in Stockholm by Chris Laney
and Lennart Östlund on January 10-12th and Marshall Amps were supplied by
DM Audio. A special thanks to everyone involved and to Pär Olsson at
Luthman Scandinavia for his support and Gibson guitars over the years.

Very Live And Dangerous
| 13th November 2007 | ||
|
|
||
|
It has long been known among Lizzy Supporters that a US Radio Broadcast from K.B.F.H. (The King Biscuit Flower Hour) of a 1977 show from Philadelphia contained recordings of six songs which subsequently featured on 'Live And Dangerous':
| ||
|
'Jailbreak' 'Dancing In The Moonlight' 'Massacre' 'Don't Believe A Word' 'Cowboy Song' 'The Boys Are Back In Town'
|
| |
|
The full concert is now available to listen to online at Wolfgangs Concert Vault: |
|
|
http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/ConcertDetail.aspx?id=20051228|7995
| |
|
Lizzy played the Tower Theatre, Philadelphia on 20th and 21st October 1977 and it is most likely that the show featured is the 21st; 26th October 1977 being the original broadcast date.
|
What is remarkable about this recording of the full show is that it is evident that even more of the recording was used as the basis for 'Live And Dangerous'
|
|
'Emerald' 'Still In Love With You' 'Warriors'
All dead-ringers for the versions on the album.
There's no doubting there was some overdubbing but this recording proves the wildly exagerrated claims that the album was mostly recorded in the studio are a nonsense and what the Lizzy Supporters who saw them during that period have always known - that Lizzy could cut it live.
It is uncertain where the rest of the 'Live And Dangerous' album is sourced from although it is known that 'Are You Ready' is from the Rainbow Theatre Gig on 29th March 1978. Perceived wisdom is that 'Southbound' is a soundcheck recording and 'Rosalie' recorded at Hammersmith Odeon on 15th November 1976.
|
|
The Tower Theatre recording goes on to demolish another 'myth', that 'Bad Reputation' and 'Opium Trail' which subsequently featured on the 1981 'Killers Live EP' were recorded in Canada and in all likelihood, little or none of 'Live And Dangerous' was recorded at Seneca College Fieldhouse, Toronto. |

Live And Dangerous - DVD Reissue - Scandal
| 18th October 2007 | |
|
Thin Lizzy: Live And Dangerous At The Rainbow - Deluxe Edition (DVD & CD)
It would appear we've been royally shafted once again as the track 'Derby Blues' (Cowboy Song - work in progress) is missing from the bonus CD. One of the major-selling points to Lizzy Fans who have most or all of the other material already!
It's no surprise to find that the full Derby College show is mooted for a March 2008 release under the title 'UK Tour 75'.
Thin Lizzy Fans are understandably angry and upset to be ripped off by whoever is behind this release.

The Main Forum Is Back | |
| 14th September 2007 | |
|
Okay after a lot of hard work and effort the main forum is back and
working and it can be found here!
So we hope that for the last time we will ask you to re-register and as
this is a more secure platform we hope this will be the last time!
Next is an update of the main site! |
|
The 2nd Temporary Forum Is Up and Running (again)
| 24th July 2007 | |
|
Okay as progress with the main forum has been slow and Freeforums did us with the technical upgrade I have set yet another temporary forum up and it can be found here! We are back up and running so come over and see all your old friends again. The bad news is that you will have to re-register sorry but it is a small price to pay!
|
|
More Technical Problems
| 22nd July 2007 | |
|
Do you ever get one of those days or weeks when you think every thing
or everyone is conspiring to mess you about and make life difficult? Yeah
well that is where I am now! Having managed to get things up and running
very quickly after the Hack and being able to set up a temporary forum -
now even that one has gone down. The techie geeks decided to do a driver
upgrade and it looks like they have hit a problem - our little oasis may
have been lost! Still not to worry - Shit Happens! So sorry folks no forum
at the moment I am keeping an eye on things and will be Fighting to bring
it back to you as soon as I can! (notice the subtle link to a Lizzy album
there!)

|
Temporary Forum Up and Running
| 11th July 2007 | |
|
The temporary forum is up and running and it can be found here!
Okay as you may or not know the forum was Hacked by some tossers so as
I have said all along we will not be beaten by the knockers or the hackers
so we have been "Brought Down" but as always "We will be Strong" and we
have bounced back and at quick speed with the temporary forum. The bad
news is that although thanks to United Hostings we were able to recover
the forum we need to make some changes and security upgrades so from 21-00
hrs on the 11th July 2007 the main forum will be taken off line until
further notice for urgent repairs and maintenance! SORRY Peps but we have
to! The other issue will be once we get it back up you may have to
re-register!
|
|
Forum Subject to Hacker Attack
| 10th July 2007 | |
|
Bad news one of those very
nice hackers has attacked the Forum causing us to take it down for now! We
are working hard to get it back up and running and United Hostings are
doing a great job as well! We are sorry for the loss of service but we
know how much you guys love to talk so if you follow the link from the
main site to the Forum hopefully you will find a little temporary one has
been set up for you to play in! Enjoy your new temporary Sand Box. Oh and
Mr FAHRETTiN ALTAY (the hacker) I hope your next shit has more spines than
a hedghog and the fleas from 1000 Camels infest your crutch - you will not
beat us! |

THE ROCKER: A PORTRAIT OF PHIL LYNOTT
| 11th April 2007 | |
|
The Rocker is an in-depth look at the life, career and tragic death of
legendary rock star Philip Lynott, the founding member of Thin Lizzy is
being offically released in the UK and Eire during April. Thin Lizzy's
breakthrough song, Whiskey in the Jar, hit the UK charts in 1973. Its
success was followed three years later by Jailbreak and The Boys are Back
in Town, which became an international hit and fulfilled Phil's dream of
becoming a rock star. This programme features interviews with Phil Lynott
and his wife, Caroline Crowther, who speaks about him for the first time
since his death; rare concert and television footage; clips from some of
the great Thin Lizzy gigs, and classic Thin Lizzy videos. With Phil's
mother, Philomena, Thin Lizzy members Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Brian
Robertson, Eric Bell and Gary Moore; managers Chris Morrison and Chris
O'Donnell, and rock stars Jon Bon Jovi, Slash, Bono, Bob Geldof, Huey
Lewis, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler and Midge Ure. We will have more news
and comments on the release of this DVD soon!

Classic Rock - April Issue

Cromer Links Pavilion | |
| 13th March 2007 | |
|
Julie Fielder has written a book called 'WHAT FLO SAID' the book is
about Cromer Links Pavilion - which was a music venue in North Norfolk,
UK, Thin Lizzy played there several times during the 60s and early 70s,
Wild Horses also graced the stage at the venue as well. The book includes
reviews, set lists and comments about the gigs together with those of
other rock bands who appeared there such as UFO, complete with dates and a
complete history of the venue and a neighbour, West Runton Pavilion. .
Promises to be an interesting read and maybe another piece of the jigsaw
is completed!

That hard working and well known Thin Lizzy supporter Father Jack has
been very busy again and the preperations for DDII are well underway FJ
has arranged what promises to be another great night with Glyder, Tizz
Lizzy and Dave Rowleys Black Country lined up so far. Philomenia Lynott
has agreed to attend which is great news! FJ has even managed to get the
venue to carry out a major refurbishment prior to the Gig so "Comfy Seats"
will be available! If you want more information about the bands check out
the links below and to have a look at the venues site I have included a
link to it as well. So here to another great night in Dumfries and hope to
see you all there!

Classic Rock - Thin Lizzy
| 18th Feb 2007 | |
|
Recent issues of Classic Rock magazine have devoted considerable
coverage to Thin Lizzy. Alongside the recent unveiling of a previously
unseen Thin Lizzy biography (together with Phil Lynott front cover) in the
March 2007 issue, the January edition of the mag featured a report on the
2006 Classic Rock awards ceremony, which took place at London's Langham
Hotel in November '06. The ceremony saw Phil Lynott given a posthumous
honour - the Tommy Vance Inspiration Award - duly collected by Philomena
Lynott, Phil's mum. Describing the occasion as 'one of the most important
nights of my life', Philomena said she was 'very, very touched' to be
receiving the award on her son's behalf, although this emotion did not
prevent her making a speech which went down a storm with the great and the
good of rock who were in attendance (including Scott Gorham, David
Coverdale, Ronnie James Dio, and Jeff Beck). Oddly, Classic Rock's "100
Icons of Rock - As Chosen by the Stars" (December '06 edition) did not
feature Phil Lynott, although the same issue compensated for his omission
somewhat by including 'Jailbreak' in its "Every Home Should Have One"
album series. Singing the praises of the 1976 album was Tokyo Dragons
singer Steve Lomax.

SINNER - Founder Speaks About THIN LIZZY Connection
| 17th Feb 2007 | |
|
Mask Of Sanity, the newest platter by Germany's long-running SINNER,
has more than a passing nod to the legacy of Phil Lynott and THIN LIZZY.
In addition to moments of uncanny resemblance, the disc closes with a
cover of 'Baby Please Don't Go'. Bassist/singer/founder Matt Sinner (who
does an admirable vocal homage to the PhilO) has explained his
fascination. "Phil was a huge influence in my earlier days. I play bass
& sing, I mostly played with two lead guitarists in the band. I love
his songwriting, his fantastic lyrics etc." Sinner and PRIMAL FEAR have a
track on the OFFICIAL Phil Lynott tribute CD. During a trip over to play
at a festival in Dublin they visited the statue, had some Guinness in his
favourite pub and visited his grave. With this positive vibe, the band
entered the recording studio. (That was ) not enough for them, so they
wrote 'Diary Of Evil' together with Roy Z. (HALFORD, BRUCE DICKINSON).
"I’m very happy about my trip in(to) the past and to have Sinner,
music-wise, back where the band belongs!" he added

Tony Visconti launches his autobiography
| 9th Feb 2007 | |
|
One-time Thin Lizzy producer Tony Visconti has this week published his autobiography with HarperCollins. The New York knob is perhaps better known to the rock music world as friend and record producer to Marc Bolan and David Bowie, and the book draws extensively on his experiences with those artists. However, there are a few short passages covering Visconti’s stints with Lizzy as producer for ‘Bad Reputation’, ‘Live and Dangerous’ and ‘Black Rose’, including the ‘old chestnut’ subject of exactly how much of Live and Dangerous was re-recorded in the studio. Visconti tells of how Lizzy were a party-hard and largely temperamental and unreliable band – a point he rather labours – and only Brian Downey and Gary Moore escape without much criticism. There are three colour photos of Phil Lynott (with Visconti, Siouxsie Sioux and Robbo respectively). The hardback book is no doubt available 'in all good bookshops' at £18.99 RRP.

Gary Moore on Planet Rock
| 3rd Feb 2007 | |
|
Gary Moore has also recently joined the ranks of guest DJs on the
digital radio station Planet Rock details here Gary presents
an "exclusive" weekly Sunday evening show (7-9pm) called 'Blues Power with
Gary Moore'. Gary's site says this about the show:- "Gary Moore will be
playing some of his all time favourite blues tracks from across the
decades and discussing the story of the blues. Focusing on some of the
original blues players including Robert Johnson, John Mayall and the three
Kings (Albert, Freddie and B.B.). Looking at British, American and new
blues, and talking about the women in blues. Not only this, but Gary Moore
will also be playing his guitar live in the studio." Have you heard Gary
on Planet Rock? - If so, let us know what you thought of it on the Rock
Legend forum!

Gary Moore Goes on Tour | |
| 3rd Feb 2007 | |
|
Ex-Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore hits the road in the UK playing a dozen
dates at traditional venues in May and June. It is unclear whether Moore,
who puzzlingly kicked off the Philip Lynott Statue Tribute concert with
one of his own songs - 'Walking by Myself' (actually a cover version) - ,
will be touring in support of a new album or continuing to promote his
2006 release 'Old New Ballads Blues'. The line-up for this tour - the set
for which is likely to focus on Gary's blues repertoire - is not certain,
but is rumoured to feature and Pete Rees on Bass, Vic Martin on Keyboards.
It is not known whether original Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey will be
part of the band, or whether Darrin Mooney - a more recent sidekick of
Gary's - will be providing the beat. Visit Gary's official site for
further details here

Tracks from Lizzy Back Catalogue to be Remixed
| 1st Feb 2007 | ||
|
Tracks from classic Thin Lizzy albums, from Nightlife released when
Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson joined the band for the Lizzy golden
period until their swansong, Thunder And Lightning, are now possibly going
to be re-mixed. The rights to the albums are in the posession of band’s
trustees, including Scott Gorham and Brian Downey. Now they are deciding
what to do with them, and remixing the material to make it ‘harder’ and
more reflective of their live sound would appear to be top of the agenda. |
||
| Scott Gorham has said that this has long been a mission for him. "Even after we had finished recording the albums back then, we all knew that the production was shit" He has been quoted as stating.''The production of a Thin Lizzy album was always so bad, and I could never understand what we were doing wrong when it sounded so great on stage. Then we’d get into the studio and we’d lose it. We’d come up with these ‘cocktail’ albums. I didn’t get it and I always wanted to have a go at fixing it. The first thing we want to do is pick an album’s worth of material that we want to remix''. | ||

The line up looks great - not only do we have a Thin Lizzy tribute band 'Black Rose' but also Philip Lynott's Ma (Philomena) and two bands from across the Irish Sea - youngsters 'Electric Savage' and the next big thing in rock 'Glyder' (new album just released!). It will be a great night and one thing is for sure - the tribute night will not be lacking in integrity!
So congratulations to all those involved in making it such a memorable night! |

SKID ROW Live And On Song

Skid Row was formed in Ireland in 1967 by bassist & songwriter Brush Shiels. The band also featured Phil Lynott on vocals, the 17 year old Gary Moore on guitar and Noel Bridgeman on drums. Phil Lynott left after recording the band’s debut single, and went on to form Thin Lizzy. The band continued as a trio, with Gary Moore, Brush Shiels & Noel Bridgeman. Eventually, Gary Moore also left, and went on to become one of rock music’s most acclaimed guitarists. Skid Row recorded two ultra-rare singles in 1969. These were only ever released in Ireland, on the independent ‘Song Records’ label. Phil Lynott was the vocalist on the A side of that first single. It is his earliest and rarest recording. The B side was sung by Gary Moore, who also handled vocal duties on the A side of the second single. All 4 sides of both singles are now released here on CD for the first time. Also included on this CD is the group’s powerful live show, recorded in London by the BBC in 1971. This recording captured the band at the peak of their improvisational powers as a concert act. |
