Scott Gorham pushes for Lynott Statue

22nd February 2006

As part of the PR to promote the current Sykes/Gorham tour, Scott Gorham has annouced that he wants a bronze of the late Phil Lynott to be erected in the city of the singer's birth as a permanent memorial. His call comes just months after a statue of the hard-living Irish rock star was erected in Dublin. Scott said it would be a fitting tribute to the Irish singer, born in the West Midlands, who died in 1986. The 54-year-old guitarist said: "There are too many boring old statues of politicians, soldiers and members of the royal family in Britain. These mean nothing to the average working Joe."

Scott Gorham in February Total Guitar Magazine

6th February 2006

Scott is featured in the Feb edition of Total Guitar! In the Rock Box article he says that he is preparing for the world tour with Thin Lizzy and is also working on a new album with 21 Guns. The Rock Box feature is not an interview they play album tracks to rock stars without telling them what it is. The Star(s) then comments on the album and the artist!

For Scott they played Cream - White Room he spotted, Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days which he did not know, Pink Floyd - Money, which was an easy one for him and he rates Dave Gilmour, when they played Mastodon - Iron Tusk he thought it was Slipknot, then the last one was Hendrix - Hey Joe his comment "Fuc*ing Great".

Thin Lizzy Phonogram Balloon Pops Up!

19th December 2005

An item recently came to light which was worthy of further investigation it was a photograph of a Balloon with Thin Lizzy written on the side. So when contact with the Pilot was made he had a great story regarding the Balloon and the 1978 Reading Pop Concert!

Here is Mike Glue's own story! "I obtained my balloon pilot's licence in 1974 and was one of seven members of a syndicate operating a balloon in Hertfordshire. Sharing the balloon with others didn't work that well so I decided in 1977 to seek sponsorship for a new one which would cost between £5,000 and £6,000 - the price of a Rover 2000 car. I wrote to a few companies without success and then a friend down my local suggested I contacted a few record companies and he gave me three addresses, one of which was Phonogram. The friend was Dave Peacock, then a session musician later to become famous as half of Chas & Dave.

Phonogram were considering hiring an airship to promote Thin Lizzy at the Reading Festival but the only airship flying in the UK then was the Goodyear airship which was based in Italy. My letter arrived on the marketing manager's desk, he sent me a telegram and after a meeting a few days later a new balloon was ordered from Cameron Balloons in Bristol. It was built is record time as the Reading Rock Festival was only 5 weeks away.

The plan was to overfly the Reading Festival whilst Lizzy were on stage on 27/8/77 but high winds made a launch impossible. However, on the Sunday at 19.10 whilst the Doobie Brothers were on stage, the balloon lifted off from Littlejohn Farm, adjacent to the festival site and drifted low over the crowd.

Apparently the Doobie Brothers were not too happy when 40,000 people started chanting Lizzy, Lizzy! The balloon landed 35 minutes later in Palmer park in Reading. Over the next few years, it was used to promote other bands as well including Status Quo, Rush, Lindisfarne, Graham Parker & The Rumour & Dire Straits. It also appeared on Multi Coloured Swap Shop in 1980 taking Maggie Philbin aloft. The balloon retired in around 1983 and was donated by Phonogram to the British Balloon Museum & Library."

The Vibe 2006 Just Gets Better - Robbo Added To The Line-Up!

10th December 2005

It has been officially announced that very special guests at Vibe For Philo 2006 will include Thin Lizzy legends Brian Robertson and Eric Bell. Both Brian and Eric have thrilled the Vibe stage before - but this is the first time that they will perform together since 1991!

Robbo will be performing with the red-hot Southbound Band - whose previous Vibe appearances have been sensational - this has all the hall marks of being something very special indeed!!!

Eric will take to the stage with the Houseshakers (a.k.a. The Tuesday Night Band of Vibe 2005) featuring the legendary Jimmy Faulkner and Noel Bridgeman. Eric and Brian will be lifting their guitars onstage together for the first time at a Vibe For Philo in fifteen years, and this will make for some unique memories.

Belfast Benefit Gig

8th April 2005

From Ivan Preston (Belfast Guitar Emporium)

On Friday 29 April 2005, Belfast Guitar Emporium (Bradbury Place) are hosting a Tribute to Phil Lynott night in The Spring and Airbrake in Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, featuring fantastic local Thin Lizzy tribute band Tinn Lizzy.

The members of this band are local guitar heroes Ian 'Speedo' Wilson and Willy Byrne, Julian Watson on drums with ex-Thin az Lizzy frontman Johnny Conlon completing the line up.

Many people, including Philomena have commented on Johnny’s voice, stating that "if you close your eyes, you would swear it was Phil himself". We are also trying to arrange one or two 'special guests' for the evening, although nothing is confirmed at present in this respect.

We are also delighted to have local up and coming rock band The Answer from Downpatrick also on the bill (check them out on their website www.theanswermusic.com). The Answer play an exciting mix of rock and blues, reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and have been impressing audiences both in Ireland and UK where they have been gigging with The Darkness at Brixton Academy and Ash at The London Astoria amongst others. The band have just completed a number of dates in the UK with Thunder, the highlight of the tour being a personal endorsement from non other than Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page whom, after hearing of comparisons between the band and Led Zeppelin, decided to check them our for himself at their Shepherd’s Bush Empire gig. Following their performance, Mr. Page was waiting backstage to say hello to the band and was extremely complimentary of their performance and their material, which consists of all original self-penned songs. High praise indeed from one of rock’s true legends.

The band have just finished recording new material in London and these recordings should be available in the shops shortly. They have also been booked to play this year’s Donington’s ‘Monsters of Rock’ Festival, which has now been re-named ‘Download’. Currently the band have offers from a number of major record labels on the table and the general consensus within the music industry is that this band could be one of the biggest acts ever to come out of Ireland. We are pleased that not only are they fans of the music of Thin Lizzy, but that they have also agreed to give their time in the midst of what is a busy schedule for themselves to this event. A major announcement regarding The Answer is imminent.

Tickets for the show on 29 April will be priced £10.00 and are available from Belfast Guitar Emporium (tel. 02890 242335, e-mail: [email protected] ) or from Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.ie/venue/196970/ ).

In the meantime details relating to the show will be available on the Belfast Guitar Emporium website www.belfastguitaremporium.com or on the Tinn Lizzy website www.tinnlizzy.co.uk . Phil’s mother Philomena will also be signing copies of her book My Boy: The Philip Lynott Story on the day of the show at Belfast Guitar Emporium. All proceeds from both any sales of Philomena’s book on the day and from the show will also go to the Phil Lynott statue fund. No individual or organisation will be making a profit out of any activity associated with the show or the book signing on 29 April 2005, with both bands and the organisers donating their time and effort free of charge, such is the esteem in which Phil’s memory is held. Your support for this unique and important event is appreciated…... It promises to be a great evening and celebration of the life and music of Philip Parris Lynott.

Sykes & Gorham end the tour...

14th Feb 2005

According to their web sites,
Sykes and Gorham will finish their tour in Limerick on 19th Feb. Official reason is: Due to the fact that John Sykes is currently having hearing problems and needs to have some work done.

Doctors are hopeful that after the work he will no longer hear Rosalie whenever someone shouts Whiskey ..... Tinnitus, eh? lol ;-)

Meanwhile, at the Cork gig, Scott had to leave the stage due to ill health. Sykes attempted Rosalie on his own but the gig was brought to a premature end.

Update 22nd March From Sykes' web page "Just to set the record straight, the European leg of the Thin Lizzy tour was put back due to a severe ear infection. After getting back to Los Angeles and seeing a specialist, I'm happy to report that everything is fine and I look forward to playing for you all soon. Thank you for all your concerns. John Sykes."

Message from 'The Mammy'

7th Feb 2005

A message from Philomena Lynott on the Trust's web site.

Hello Everyone

As you all probably know by now, we are in the last few months build up to the statue of Philip, going up in Dublin’s Grafton St.

Due to the heavy workload involved, I don’t always get the time to answer individual people, but I just wanted to say a special thank you, to all the supporters around the world, for their kind words and wishes, that I read in the guest book, on The Roisín Dubh site.

It is deeply touching to know, that Philip's words and music, still means so much, to so many people.

I look forward to seeing you all in August, when The Boy is Back in Town

Kindest Regards to you all

Gary Moore has told Japan's Burrn! magazine that he has written 8 or 9 songs in a celtic rock vein which are "a bit like Thin Lizzy". Has Moore finally made a return to the Wild Frontier genre ... or will we all be singing the blues?

Tsunami Appeals

20th Jan 2005

Gary Moore plays on a charity single, titled Grief Never Grows Old in aid of the Asian Tsunami Appeal, which will be released by Universal on Monday 24th January. It had it's first airing on The Steve Wright Show on BBC Radio 2 on Thursday afternoon, 13 January, 3:45pm, after only being mixed the previous evening. Universal are creating a unique label for the song called One World Records, which will be available in all highstreet music stores in the UK. For more see Gary's news page.

In addition, Ozzie is organising some fund-raising via the Network of Wild Ones. This mailing list has been going since 1997 and you can subscribe here. Here's the plan from Ozzie:

1) Look for Lizzy-related items you can/wish to part with, take a picture of it or make a very good description. Make a suggestion for the lowest bid and to what e-mail adress the bidders should write to. Send it to [email protected], put "Charity" in the field of subject.

2) Once I get the e-mail I'll make a site for them. On a given time the site will be up and the bidding will start, each seller will keep track of their items, getting bids via mail. On a given time the auction will stop (7 days later perhaps).

3) The seller will send a e-mail with the name of the highest bidder to [email protected] - I will then contact them, and they'll send the money (notes only) to me and when I recieve the money I will tell the seller who then will send the item to the winner of the auction.

4) The seller will pay for the shipping and I will pay for the cost to exchange any other currency to Swedish. The money we raise will go to the Red Cross International

Ninteen @ 19th Vibe

6th December 2004

Nineteen have been confirmed to appear at the Vibe 2005

The band will feature:

Laurence Archer (Grand Slam, UFO, Stampede, Wild Horses) – Guitar
Mark Kirkland (Laurence Archer’s Grand Slam) – Guitar
Jon Stone (Laurence Archer’s Grand Slam) – Vocals
Jo Burt (Black Sabbath, Freddie Mercury, Brian Setzer, Virginia Wolf) – Bass
Simon Jeffrey (Laurence Archer’s Grand Slam, Bernie Torme) - Drums

Nineteen will also be joined by special guest Robbie Brennan (Skid Row, Grand Slam) and will play a selection of Grand Slam songs as well as other Lynott material that was incorporated into the original Grand Slam set. They will also play some acoustic numbers at the Pre-Vibe.

Jo Burt has a great rock'n'roll pedigree, having played with some of the biggest names in the business. While on tour with the Tom Robinson Band in Dublin, Jo was approached after the show by a young Adam Clayton asking Jo if he could pass his demo tape to Steve Lillywhite (Tom Robinson’s producer at the time) "I'll do better than that, he is backstage I'll introduce you to him" replied Jo. And so Steve Lillywhite came to produce the first U2 album and the rest is history!

Rock Legend domain name

1st November 2004

I've given up on being able to get www.thin-lizzy.net back as our main domain name. It's owned by the original web designer Dave Hirst but despite a couple of requests via 'phone since the big server crash, I've had no luck in getting the domain pointed back at Rock Legend.

Since I own www.thin-lizzy.com, I think we'll just have to settle with that as the official domain name ... please let me know if you spot any links to the old .net name.

Cheers,

Dan

Server Problems!

23rd September, UPDATED 1st October 2004

We're having a severe server nightmare! The main server is down and www.thin-lizzy.net doesn't work. So, we've loaded the site here on a different sever and pointed www.thin-lizzy.com at it - we hope to soon get www.thin-lizzy.net pointing there too but the domain name is owned by the original RL webmaster who is out of email contact at present.

Also our forum server in Florida has also been down too due to hurricane damage! We are trying to move the forum to the new server too - the URL should become www.forum.thin-lizzy.com. The problem is we cannot access the original messages and usernames until the hurricane damage has been sorted.

Likewise, the ever popular Picture Tickets will be available from selected outlets nationwide!

For the moment, however, set-lists, performers, venues and the huge amount of background work involved in staging the Vibe is under way and we look forward to letting you be the first to know what's happening as it's confirmed.

Living with the NME
7th September 2004

Following on from the sins of their past, when they turned against Lizzy and Lynott, NME have now seen the light (and £s) and have included Thin Lizzy in a special release. No idea at this stage how much Thin Lizzy is included or whether it will be in their usual vein. This is from their editor .....

Following the infamous volumes on Glam!, Swinging London in the 1960’s, Punk and The Beatles comes NME ORIGINALS: GODS OF ROCK -

148 pages packed with some of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll stories ever, reprinted from the archives of NME and its sister publication, Melody Maker.

Full of rare photos and salacious interviews, GODS OF ROCK includes Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zandt telling you how to stomp a guy half to death in a barroom brawl, Ted Nugent insisting that "Anyone who digs adventurous music would get off sleeping in a dead sheep", and Ozzy Osbourne getting arrested for pissing on the Alamo. Freddie Mercury boasts that his slacks are so tight that one lady writer rightly guessed his religion, Axl Rose does his damnedest to get a riot going, Perry Farrell shows you videos of himself shooting up and Lemmy claims to be a "reincarnated Nazi."

Johnny Rotten gets beaten up by the cops, Eddie Van Halen pummels a wall until his knuckles bleed, Kurt Cobain denies doing smack, Johnny Thunders chucks up on the tarmac at Paris Airport, Slipknot punch each other in the face, Stevie Nicks refers to cocaine as a little more-ish, like Sarah Lee Cheese Cake and Courtney Love is dragged screaming and kicking from somebody else’s stage.

Featuring Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, The Cult, The Runaways, New York Dolls and many, many more, NME ORIGINALS: GODS OF ROCK is the most lairy, lewd, ludicrous and life-affirming read on the planet.

On sale now: £5.50.

Happy Birthday Phillip Lynott & Rock Legend!
20th August 2004

As we start Year 3 of Rock Legend, we'd like to pay our respects to the man responsible for it all!

Happy Birthday Philo!!

To celebrate two full years of RL, Nick has written a new editorial - check it out via the News sub-menu on the main page. We've also clarified the credits and contributions to the site on the Who We Are link, so now you (and your lawyers - arf arf) know who really is behind all this.

Also, look out for yet another new forum - we returned to the original VOY forum when our new home was taken away ... but VOY is just a just a temporary home while we get something better sorted out. And it's on its way!

Live And Dangerous - On Top Again!
4th August 2004

Following the controversy over the critics' choice of their 50 Greatest Live Albums Ever, Classic Rock magazine re-conducted the poll but this time they asked their readers - the fans! The September 2004 issue contains the results.

The great news is that Live And Dangerous comes out on top again! This is a fantastic achievement! Okay we already knew it was the best ... but what a result to top both polls! It is absolutely brilliant to see Lizzy get the respect and acclaim they have always deserved after they've been away so long. Yet again Thin Lizzy grace the cover with a great shot of Philip and the write-up of the album is a treat to read and well worth the cover price alone.

And there's more ..... there's an eight page feature extracted from Alan Byrne's book Thin Lizzy - Soldiers Of Fortune graced with some great and unseen (to these eyes) photos. Okay some grumblings on this site's Forum that it is a straight lift from the book rather than a proper new article but this is still a must have.

Footnote : Alan told me he was doing something for Classic Rock and I thought "Aye, I'll believe that when I see it!". Well b*gger me!

Any of our overseas readers who want a copy contact Phil at [email protected] as my new local, round the corner 24 hour Tesco's, now stocks it. You'll have to pay for it and p&p; mind :-)

Thin Lizzy Forever - The Preview
12th July 2004

Latest news from Jörgen Holmstedt about the Thin Lizzy Forever Documentary .....

Dear Lizzy fans,

It's been two years since I, Jovan Radomir and Gerhard Malmberg started work on the documentary Thin Lizzy Forever.

We are delighted to tell you that there will be a preview of some of the material on Sweden's main TV station SVT 07.35 CET on Saturday the 17 July. It's part of the massive music show Hårdrocknatt (Hard Rock Night) which will run for 12 hours starting the previous evening. The Thin Lizzy Special, as this 45 minute thing will be called, features videos of the band with bits and pieces from our interviews with Brian Downey (done in Dublin 2004 04 23) and Scott Gorham (Stockholm Spring 2003). This way we will get our fave band on TV twice.

And the real thing? You'll have to wait a little longer. But it's gonna be good, I promise you.

Rock hard,

Jörgen, Jovan and Gerhard.

New Plaque
2nd July 2004

Dawn McCarrick from the Roisin Dubh Trust has sent us a photo of the new plaque .....

This is how the new plaque to replace the one stolen from Philip's grave looks. The image has been laser etched onto marble. Philomena is still wary of putting it on the grave and considering yesterday's awful news it may be wise not to as these despicable people are aware the first one was stolen.

Robbo News ....
29th June 2004

Some news from Sören....

Hi!

Robbo is featured on the new Five Fifteen CD The Man Who Sold Himself from Ranch Records(Ranch-26 982049-3). He plays on Jesus Went To N.Y.C.(Again) and Rocking Horse.

We've just finished recording 6 new songs for his next project which won't be called The Clan (as previous reported) due to the fact that it's musically too far away from The Clan or what you would expect from Robbo. The working title is Yodel! at the moment and it's inspired by The Darkness, Ash, Jim White, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle and many others. Guests includes Rob Lamothe (who also co-wrote 3 songs), Fredrik Akesson (Talisman), Hakan Persson (Skintrade) and jazz guitar player Andreas Pettersson. The recording was done in Das Boot Studios in Stockholm.

On July 11th Robbo will guest with Ash at the Oxegen festival in Ireland and a European tour with Five Fifteen will follow later in the autumn. There's been talks about collaborations with Dead Men Walking (Kirk Brandon) and the reformed Grand Slam.

All the best and enjoy your summer holidays!

Alan Byrne’s Book – Thin Lizzy - Soldiers Of Fortune
26th May 2004

The first copies of Alan's book came through letterboxes yesterday.

At last the book is with us!

We look forward to hearing your views on the web board.

Phil: Still haven’t had time to sit down with mine.

Dan: Where the hell is mine! :(

"Thin Lizzy were the original punks. To be honest, the punks just tagged onto us. I went over with a bottle of Johnny Walker in one hand and had Johnny Rotten by the other. I said "punk, you're no fucking punk."

To be honest if they had come up to us with the "fuck everything" attitude we'd have just nutted them and they knew it."

Brian Robertson

"Thin Lizzy was a band that lived life to the full. In their heyday they mixed lilting celtic melodies with a rock'n'roll edge and had a reputation as one of the seventies best live acts – as exemplified on the multi-platinum Live And Dangerous album. A hard drinking, drug taking, lady-killer gang, they went on the rampage across the world's stages, often blowing away the opposition in the process.

Phil Lynott's six foot plus wiry frame and the label of the only black man in Dublin ensured that he stood out from the crowd. Thin Lizzy soon became the vehicle for him to play a range of characters – the vagabond, the romeo, the streetfighter, the reckless lover.

Backed by some of the best heavy rockers – Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and the transient Gary Moore Lynott was the archetypal rock'n'roll rebel. In many ways a hopeless romantic, Lynott was a man of many contradictions, but he crafted some of the seventies greatest pop songs. Sometimes sensitive, sometimes bullying and arrogant, his workaholic tendencies often drove himself and those around him beyond the limit.

In January 1986 Lynott finally succumbed to the lifestyle he had so doggedly clung onto. His reluctance to abandon the recklessness that haunted many of the characters in his songs finally meant the difference between life and death. What emerges is the portrait documenting the rise and fall of the wild men of rock, whilst never losing sight of the lyricism inherent in Lynott’s Irish roots."

Inside Thin Lizzy 1970 - 1984 (sic) DVD
17th May (Update 25th May) 2004

They Say: "This is the first complete critical review of the glory years when the late, great Phil Lynott led the band and features a survey of the band’s work from the first album through to Lynott’s swansong Thunder And Lightning."

Nothing about this release on the classicrockproduction website but we have emailed them asking for information.

UPDATE 25th May

Thanks for the e-mail. Here is a brief overview of the DVD. It runs for 70mins and covers some 13 albums from Thin Lizzy to Thunder & Lightning. There are some 30 tracks featured though not all are played in their entirety. As you would expect the classics The Rocker, The Boys Are Back, Whiskey In The Jar, Jailbreak etc are there. there are interviews with Phil, including a rare interview with him on the Australian tour.

Footage of the Bands appearance on The Tube playing Boys, Cold Sweat, Sun Goes Down, as well as the time they played Sydney Opera House and Gary Moore was with them. All in all a great product which we are sure you will agree. It will be shown on the website next week.

Kind regards

News from the Robbo Camp
21st May 2004

News from Sören....

Just a brief info about what's going on in our camp...we've just finished mixing a song for the forthcoming documentary Thin Lizzy Forever!, recorded a new song with The Darkness in mind and also recorded 4 new songs(3 co-written by Rob Lamothe) for a forthcoming Robbo CD.

We're doing a B.B. King Tribute in Stockholm, Sweden sunday 23/5 and the Oxygen Festival in Ireland with Ash, The Darkness and David Bowie the 10th of july.

Some people have asked about Robbo's sound on the Live And Dangerous album and the simple truth is a bloody good guitar, a great player, Marshall 100's with reverb, Marshall 4x12's, a wahwah-pedal, attitude and lots of whisky!

There's also been questions about Robbo playing with Motörhead in the future and that's not going to happen ... Robbo loves the album he recorded with the band, but not anything else from that period! Neither does Lemmy, by the way! He's played Rock It live with Five Fifteen at several gigs and like I said before, he's not ashamed of any of the songs he recorded with the band, but he never wished to be a member of the band and in hindsight maybe he should have passed the offer down.

All the best,

Sören Lindberg

Thin Lizzy Forever
4th May 2004

More from Jörgen Holmstedt on the exciting project that we featured earlier.....

Dear Lizzy supporters,

Just got back from Dublin where me, Jovan Radomir (my excellent 'co-pilot' on this project) and Gerhard Malmberg (top photographer and crystal clear sound tech) did the Irish part of the Thin Lizzy Forever documentary.

I'm happy to report it was a complete success. We met up with Brian Downey, Jim Fitzpatrick, Philomena Lynott and one more person, very close to the Lynott family, who has previously never given an interview. Especially the Brian Downey part turned out very interesting. The generous and ever so kind drummer spent eight hours with us doing something which has never been done before when it comes to all things Lizzy.

In a few weeks time we are gonna have a meeting to see what remains to be done. Right now we are quite exhausted and must do our normal jobs for a while. There are still a few things up in the air which we are waiting for to happen. Then it's the editing job, which is gonna be difficult considering we have about 15 hours of material which will have to be slimmed down to an hour. But that's gonna be one fantastic if not magic hour.

When will we get to see it, I hear you cry? Sorry, but I really can't say. We've been working in this thing in our spare time for almost two years now, financing it ourselves. From the beginning it was supposed to be just a 30 minute programme with Robbo saying a few things inbetween some Lizzy music (See the photo by Poke Industries, taken during the making of the docu). Then one thing led to the other and now we will not stop until we think we have the best possible docu we can produce.

Like with everything else I've done regarding Lizzy over the last 25 years (the fan club, the fanzines, the compilation albums, the radio docu, the articles etc), this is turning into an obsession, I tell ya!

Besides there is no reason to hurry. That's the beauty of working independent, there is no boss or company demanding you to deliver on a deadline. We work until we are satisfied. But sometime between August till December is a good guess. Fingers crossed. Me, Jovan and Gerhard would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Downey, Jim Fitzpatrick, Philomena Lynott and everybody else in Dublin for taking the time out to turn our ideas and dreams into reality when it comes to the Thin Lizzy Forever documentary.

Rock hard,

Jörgen

P.S. I will personally reward the person who can supply me with a clean video copy of Cowboy Song which was left over from the Live And Dangerous live video but used for promotion. I desperately need if for the docu.

Please send it to me and I will make you a happy Lizzy fan indeed:

Jörgen Holmstedt,
Barnängsgatan 30, III tr
SE -116 41 Stockholm
SWEDEN

Also, if any of you fans out there has anything else you'd like to be considered for inclusion in this docu (pics, videos etc), send it to me and I promise you we will take serious look at it. If we use any stuff the fans send us, like a useable copy of the Cowboy Song video, they will be credited in the film.

I'll be back with another report in a few months time.

Dare: Update From Melodicrock.com
19th April 2004

News from melodicrock.com:

"I thought it time to catch up with Dare frontman Darren Wharton for a quick chat about the band's new album Beneath The Shining Water. The album is due out in Europe through MTM Music June 7, with a preview song Sea Of Roses currently available.

I caught Darren in the midst of the final mix - the very last track to be done in fact. He describes the album as a mix of Out Of The Silence and Calm Before The Storm and definitely rockier than the band's last album Belief. But don't expect anything like Blood From Stone.

Darren is adamant he won't record anything as heavy as that again. The album features a couple of very radio friendly tracks which Darren hopes will catch the attention of radio programmers in the UK, just as White Horses did from Belief. The rest of the album is a little darker and moodier. And Darren also apologizes for the lack of Dare website updates. He has been "killing himself" getting Beneath The Shining Water completed and hopes to spend a little more time on the web soon. So don't forget the album is due out June 7 and Dare will appear live at a few European festivals over the summer, including the Deep Impact Open Air Festival in Munich, July 24! (www.deep-impact2004.de)."

Statetrooper – Statetrooper
Catalogue Number : Escape ESM 095

After singer Gary Barden left the Michael Schenker Group at the peak of it’s powers, he dipped out of sight until 1986, re-emerging in a new six-piece, yet still trading in similar melodic rock goods. It’s taken ‘til now to get hold of the 9 track CD set, boosted by half a dozen bonus cuts – two demos from sessions with Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson and four live in the studio takes.

***** Sören Lindberg (Robbo's Manager) later confirmed that Robbo had not in fact recorded any material with Statetrooper. *****

Thin Lizzy Forever
27th January 2004

More on the exciting news from Jörgen Holmstedt that we featured earlier.....

Hi all! An update on the Swedish TV documentary Thin Lizzy Forever here. The last thing we’ve done is an interview with John Sykes when he recently was in Stockholm to play with Scott Gorham. That means we now have interviewed the following people: Sykes, Gorham, Eric Bell, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson (twice), Jimmy Bain, Don Airey, John Norum, Ian Haugland and Jan Johansen. They all say some very interesting things.

As you might know, Robertson/Norum/Haugland/Johansen are performing the song Don’t Believe A Word in this film. I’ll think we will end the whole thing with that.

Hopefully me and the rest of our small team (the other two guys being Swedish TV personality Jovan Radomir and camera/light/sound man Gerhard Malmberg) will be off to Dublin in the Spring to meet a few people. Then we are going to interview a few more Swedish people as this documentary will have a Swedish angle. That doesn’t mean it will not be of interest to all you non-Swedish people, as most folks in this 60 minute film will be talking in English anyway.

We are aiming at having finished product in August, but this could be subject to delay as we are financing this ourselves and basically doing it whenever we have time off or some Lizzy related person is in town.

That’s all for now. I’ll get back with more info in a few months, OK?

Rock hard,

Jörgen Holmstedt

Cold Sweat in Finland
27th January 2004

Jari Salonen from Finland has sent us a copy of his Thin Lizzy tribute band’s great recordings of Cold Sweat and the Cowboy Song. The band are also called Cold Sweat. Very accomplished musicians they are too, they do a fine job. Both songs while not straying too far from the originals feature some very inventive guitar work and a solid rhythm section. The vocals are strong too and do not try and replicate Phil.

I met Jari at the Vibe and he said that they hoped to play it in the future, I for one would look forward to that.

Circle of Fools?
16th December 2003

Following some debate on the Forum, here's the details surrounding a mysterious new bootleg ....

A few years ago, a hoax bootleg called Unfinished Sympathy was advertised. Based upon previous debate on web boards, it was supposedly an attempt by some Lizzy fans with rare unreleased material to goad other fans who were looking for these tracks.

Now a new bootleg CD called Circle of Fools has appeared on http://www.scotiagallery.org.uk/ containing very similar artwork to Unfinished Sympathy.

It contains many unreleased and unobtainable tracks including one that no one here at RL has ever heard of - In The Delta.

Fact or fiction? We'll have to wait and see. Check out the Forum for up-to-date debate.

The cover of the Unfinished Sympathy hoax. Pretty similar eh?

12th December 2003

Alan Byrne’s book - Statement on www.roisindubh.com

"I finally have a concrete schedule for the Lizzy book. The book is going to the printers on the 8th Jan 04 and will be shipped later that month. The CD-ROM will follow in due course. The initial print run has already been exceeded by pre-orders which is great and we'll be waiting until the last minute basically before a final count is done and a new print run will be decided. There have a been a few late changes as well regarding the format and content of the book but its all been done to better the project obviously as opposed to hindering its impact."

Best of luck Alan

ROCK LEGEND EXCLUSIVE - NEW LIZZY DOCUMENTARY.
29th August 2003

Some exciting news from Jörgen Holmstedt who's been talking to Phil Osborne.

Jörgen is a journalist and the guy who ran the Swedish Thin Lizzy Fan Club. As well as producing Thin Lizzy News (e.g. www.df.lth.se/~ozzie/TLN/) he has also been the person behind the compilation of the Swedish Gary Moore album Blood Of Emeralds and the Thin Lizzy The Boys Are Back In Town Swedish release. He also does the sleeve notes for Gary Moore albums.

"I've decided to go official with the making of the Swedish Thin Lizzy documentary, and you are the first I'm informing about this.

The working title is Thin Lizzy Forever and the running length will be an hour. So far we have interviewed Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Eric Bell, Scott Gorham and Jimmy Bain. We have about six or seven hours of footage in the can.

We have also filmed Brian Robertson performing the slow/fast Life arrangement of Don't Believe A Word with some well known Swedish artists who are big Lizzy fans. This was done especially for this project and this piece alone took a staggering nine months to get together, as this is an independent film done on a very small budget.

Much of this documentary will have an Swedish angle as the band was, and still is, massive in Sweden. This means that Swedish people who have worked for the band will be interviewed. Also Swedish friends of Lizzy will be talking to us.

Much work remains to be done, like a trip to Dublin for further interviews, but my colleague Jovan Radomir and I hope to be done within six months when we will offer the finished product to various Swedish television stations".

ALAN BYRNE - THE STORY BEHIND THE BOOK
29th August 2003

Following the recent controversy on the web board, Alan Byrne explains the story behind his book.

(i) Publishing Deal:

There was probably about eight or nine months of initial ground- work done before I even approached a publisher with this notion for a book on Phil Lynott. I was just sussing out the possibilities. Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy, though respected, highly so in this country, Ireland, had been out of the public eye so long that very many publishers viewed the possibilities for the project with limited foresight.

I decided to try my hand locally, in Cork City that is and came across a publishing house by the name of Bradshaw's. They dealt primarily with poetry, still do, and as they seemed to be keen initially and were willing to cover expenses to a degree, it seemed ridiculous to turn it down. Big mistake, in hindsight as material was coming in very slowly, I hadn't really worked out a complete template of how I wanted to structure the project. In the beginning this project wasn't going to be anything other than a tribute.

I had read a book on the late Freddie Mercury called 'This Is The Real Life' and that was written by two guys called David Evans and David Minns. They had quite simply decided to interview a lot of Mercury's closest friends and recall the man they got to know away from the stage. An intimate recollection of sorts and this was the road I was initially going down when I started this project. I thought the balance might be interesting considering the normal reasons Thin Lizzy or Phil Lynott's name is mentioned in the papers these days.

Before I knew it I was running out of time and Bradshaw's out of patience, as they needed to see an early draft. The project was going to take far longer to complete than what was first thought and they couldn't afford to finance the project for another eighteen months. So, we parted company, I re-thought what type of book I wanted to write and before long agreed that if a Lynott book was going to be written then it should be a complete biography of not just Lynott but the band he led, Thin Lizzy. In a way if Bradshaw's could have financed the project then a lot of the people that have appeared in this book probably never would have considered the type of book I was writing from day one.

So, then the real test began, trying to track down these guys like Mark Nauseef, Gus Isadore, John Alcock, Robin George and David Mallet, all of whom played some vital roles. Then sometime in Summer of 2001 I heard about some guy who was just about to publish a book on Lynott, 'Rockin' Vagabond' it was called. I don't even know how well it did, if at all but I do know the guy who wrote it died shortly afterwards. It was also around this time that another publisher was interested, whose name for the life of me I can't remember but the bottom line was that after agreeing the preliminaries the deal offered was too sketchy to follow up on. Plus I felt that there was still a little way to go with interview candidates and once again burrowed for another eight months.

In the end it paid off because in the summer 2002 terms were finally agreed with SAF Publishing, who are based in London England. I signed the contract sometime in August, submitted the final manuscript the following November and what came after that I'll discuss later on a bit. Their track record is good, they specialise in music bio's, having previously published books on the late George Harrison, Procul Harum and lately Morrisey.

(ii) Writing Lynott/Lizzy Bio

Without back- tracking too much this project was previously intended, to be based solely on Phil Lynott. The effect his impression had amongst friends and ultimately his achievements on an artistic level. I had originally titled it 'Still Alive', because in effect he always will be alive on record. All you have to do is watch a few of the documentaries produced on Lizzy and you'll see this via his friends' recollections, slipping into their dreams and their consciousness.

It did seem after a period of time that if this project were to get to a publishing stage then I would have to re-think the whole process, so I did. I'm thankful now I did as I feel its after pushing the quality and depth to such a degree that even now I'm pretty happy with the final cut as it were.

Various names were bandied about, one came in which I really like, 'Mr. Rock 'n' Roll', can't remember who suggested it but it’s the way a few people described Phil. Again as it was now an in depth Lizzy bio this was rendered void. 'Still Alive And Dangerous' didn't seem to cut any ice with anyone so I just forgot about a title for ages until the time came to finalise one. In the end it became 'Thin Lizzy- Soldiers Of Fortune', which I really like.

The best part about the whole process though was meeting, speaking, writing and generally getting in contact with so many people who were of a near equal talent to Lynott. Some even more so in they're chosen fields. That I think in the end was my reward for this project.

(iii) Editing the project

At various stages through the project I constantly went back when new information ran out and tried to re-vamp as much as I could especially since I had the publishing deal confirmed. A few friends in the early part of the project took a look at how it was shaping up and made their suggestions, of which numerous were utilised and then I suppose the final way it was presented came down to me. That is of course up until the final submission to the publishers last November.

That did cause its own set of problems in that there was quite an amount of material that I knew was going to arrive after the deadline which I had to work out and deem suitable. I hadn't quite figured on the late response from some people however, which in turn would cause heavy delays, this I'll cover later on.

I spent the next few months editing together the new material and fortunately there was quite an amount left over which I've already planned for a further release.

There are three people assigned to editing the project and also myself. But as with any other editing team, it isn't as much so aimed at deleting as it is about making the flow of the text a whole lot better.

(iv) Publishing Delays

This is almost like a continuation of the last point in that there are a variety of reasons for the delays, all of it is inter-twined. For instance my submission was double the specified quantity in the contract, I refer here to text, not a bad complaint to make but still one which requires more work.

A decision was taken to delay the release from March of this year to the latter part of summer to back track over a variety of things that were over-looked. For example, a lot of the text had been written some time before the submission and it had dated badly. In some cases the time line was contradicted by interviewees, which meant that, well in my opinion, memory isn't quite a teller of truths, it will play games, no malice intended, that’s just the way it goes, so things like these had to be corrected. This task fell to me in June this year and I spent the next eight weeks revising the text. As a point of interest, there isn't any reference made to Philip Lynott's 'lost son' in this book, you wouldn't have wanted a book delayed even further would you?

To back up the book, the CD-ROM was delayed. As it is being used as a promotional tool it will be released nearer the time the book is on the shelves. I feel that is easily understandable, as a heavy delay in between availability mightn't have the desired effect.

So the delay overall is due to circumstances which are altogether for the better of the project, I can't see why anybody should be putting out a project which they feel they could have done better. I have long since cast aside the search for a 'definitive biography'. If that’s what people are after then all I can suggest is to pull out your record collection and listen to Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy, that’s the only place where you'll find that divine definitive mix.

(v) Unused material

I've been wondering what to do about this for quite some time, but even now all of it hasn't been catalogued. It would be my intention in time to come to delve back into the Lynott magic, and perhaps drive from another alley. There is a substantial amount there and I have no doubt that over the next few years the market will be there to hear about the further unknown adventures of one Johnny The Fox. But that really is a story for another day, and even if it does come together it sure as hell won't take as long to write as 'Soldiers Of Fortune'.

In the end the whole purpose of the project was to present as many people who had close associations with Thin Lizzy in the biography format who had never before taken part. These insights I feel are as important if not more so than those who participated in previous biographies but that is only my opinion on what a real supporter of music wants, not just Thin Lizzy's.

I want you to enjoy it, I loved almost every minute of doing it. But the peaks and troughs come hand in hand. Ultimately if the project brings home to anyone who reads it a sense of achievement by a man and a band who were against all the odds then I've successfully captured what I felt was the essence of a rock and roll band.

LIMEHOUSE LIZZY - ALIVE & VERY DANGEROUS
20th June 2003

UK-based trbute band Limehouse Lizzy, fronted by Wayne Ellis (right), are on their Live and Dangerous tour (face it, when are they not on the road!). I managed to catch them playing the Leeds Irish Centre last night and it was an excellent performance as always. It is a big venue and it was packed out! The set started with the ENTIRE Live and Dangerous double album (from Jailbreak to The Rocker inc.) and, following a 15 minute break, continued with more. The second set included: Do Anything You Want To; Killer on the Loose; Chinatown; Out in the Fields; Waiting for an Alibi; Whiskey; Black Rose.

May have missed one or two. Great band. Great show. Go see 'em if you can!

Philip Statue News From Roisín Dubh
3rd May 2003

Following many years of petitioning and a lot of difficult negotiations, the Roisín Dubh Trust has been informed by Dublin City Council, that agreement in principal for a prime Dublin site to erect a statue of the father of Irish Rock, Philip Lynott, has been approved.

This news will be welcomed, not least by the many thousands that signed petition forms over the years insisting that Philip be honoured and remembered, but also by those closest to him.

The exact location for the statue will be Harry Street adjoining Grafton Street in Dublin City centre, subject to planing permission

The Trust feels that the location is both fitting and poignant.

Philip’s mother, Philomena who headed the drive to have him honoured was naturally elated at the news. “I am delighted that Dublin City Council have seen fit to give permission that will allow the Roisín Dubh Trust to erect a statue of Philip. ”

THE BOY IS BACK TO TOWN!

Alan Byrne's Book Release Date Put Back
3rd May 2003

Alan Byrne's Book Release Date Put Back

"The book will be released in June of this year. Due to good things really, I suppose. We've had some huge orders in from Eason's (Ireland) and interest from the American distributor has been fantastic so the decision has been taken to delay the release until early Summer. Usually the Spring/Autumn release dates come into play but there are a few issues to be sorted out and as a secondary point it has allowed time to include more recollective material relating to Phil Lynott's lost legacy. The book will be finally released in late May/early June which will coincide with the farewell tour climax of 1983 as a twentieth anniversary. The CD-ROM will also be delayed though it will be released before the book.It is now going to print around the 5/6th of May and will be distributed around the 20th"

Two new Lizzy bootlegs released in the digipack format are doing the rounds in Germany. Titled Look What The Wind Blew In - Rare Tracks Vol 1  and Gonna Creep Up On You - Rare Tracks Vol 2 both these contain nothing new to collectors.  Tracks are mostly BBC Sessions and in concert performances taken from the Man and his Music series and various Lizzy B sides.  Nice packaging shame about the content!

SYKES/GORHAM LINE UP CONFIRMED
4th March 2003

As mentioned here last month, John Sykes and Scott Gorham are to go out on another 'Thin Lizzy' tour this year. The confirmed lineup will be completed by drummer Michael Lee and bass player Guy Pratt. Lee has played drums with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant as well as The Cult and Little Angels. Pratt is a well known session man who has toured with Pink Floyd and Gary Moore.

Two more gig dates to make note of are the Schwung Festival (Belgium) with Girlschool, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple on the 29th of May and Poppodium Plato Helmond (Holland) on May 30th. Previously it's been announced that the boys will play at the Bang Your Head Festival in Germany June 27-28 (together with bands like Twisted Sister, Dio, Hammerfall, U.D.O., Y&T;, Dokken and TNT).

Further info on these gigs can be found at:

Schwung festival URL: http://www.debevers.be/index2.htm
Plato URL: http://www.plato.helmondweb.nl/
Bang Your Head Festival URL:
http://www.bang-your-head.de/english/ehome.htm

A currently circulating rumour is that they are also to go out on tour supporting Deep Purple this year. Another snippet for you all is that Scott Gorham was talking with Joe Elliot at Def Leppard's gig in London last week, fuelling rumours of Sykes and Gorham going out on the road with Def Leppard later this year. We'll have to wait and see if either of these come true or not.

Scott Gorham is due to play some guitar on the album, so this maybe this is where the rumour came from. The album is planned for release in early 2003.

ERIC BELL NEWS
9th September 2002

Despite Management enthusiasm and public encouragement Eric Bell's Thin Lizzy played their last gig until further notice at a bikers festival in Norway July 27th. The festival itself was a huge success and the audience response was magnificent, the band were of course invited back to perform 2003 which they will attend playing their blues set - with a few chosen Lizzy songs - including Whisky ..... , The Rocker, Slow Blues and maybe a couple more. Many thanks to Norwegian tour promoter Jo who was excellent throughout and supplied lots of beer.

At this point we would all like to thank all of our many fans and friends that have supported us at the Lizzy shows/gigs/festivals/tours and would hope to see you all supporting us at our blues gigs in near future.

Eric, Andy and Tony have decided to concentrate on the promotion of new blues album A Blues Night in Dublin and they will be touring the UK and Europe as The Eric Bell Band. In addition Chuck Berry's keyboard player Mark Stevens will be joining the band for some shows. The first of these dates will be in France 16 November at a guitar festival (Mark is playing at this one) and November 30th sees the boys as a 3 piece at Red Lion, Gravesend, Kent. Hopefully 2003 will see the release of new albums featuring Eric's own material.

NEWS ROUNDUP
21st August 2002

As we are kicking off the site it is appropriate to make an update on what is happening with the various ex-members of Thin Lizzy.

Brian Robertson
Robbo
has recently played a few dates in Scandinavia with the band 5-15 from Finland. It is a possibility that Robbo will tour with them again later in the year.

Robbo will appear at the Frankie Miller Tribute Night (in support of The Drake Music Project), Saturday 7th September, at the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom. It will feature The Frankie Miller Band & Full House + Guests. Confirmed artists include Joe Walsh, Sensational Alex Harvey Band with Guest Vocalist Dean Ford (ex-Marmalade), Ray Wilson (ex-Genesis & Stiltskin), Nazareth and many more. The House Band will consist of Brian Robertson lead guitar, Chrissie Stewart bass, Ted McKenna drums and Hugh McKenna keyboards.

The Frankie Miller tribute CD, also featuring Robbo, with the title Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed but Most Definitely Blues! will be released Saturday 7th September. On it are too many bands and artists to mention.

Brian Downey
Downey
is playing live every now and then with The Ben Prevo Band and with Blues Up Front. Next known gig is with Blues Up Front at The Music Room, The Plough, 28 Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1 on August 24th, showtime 9.00pm.

Philip Lynott
The long awaited CD by Phil Lynott's post-Thin Lizzy band, Grand Slam, on the Zoom Club Records label, seems to be kicked off with a special limited edition (500 copies) CD single box set. It features A Whiter Shade Of Pale/Like A Rolling Stone, which is a medley of the classic songs by Procol Harum and Bob Dylan.

Gary Moore
Moore has started a new band, Scars, together with Darrin Mooney on drums (ex-Primal Scream) and Cass Lewis on bass (ex-Skunk Anansie). Theis debut CD is due out on Sanctuary in September. Early reports are saying it is a more rocking effort than the bluesy CDs Moore has put out the last decade. To promote the CD, Scars will make an extensive tour of Europe. (check www.gary-moore.com/Tour_Dates/tour_dates.html for up to date info).

The official Gary Moore web site tells us that a previously unreleased album track Livin' with the Blues, from the Back to the Blues sessions, is set for release on September 6th, on a charity compilation CD called Sound Minds. This CD has been produced to aid Wicklow Mental Health Association - an affiliate of Mental Health Ireland. It will be released on September 6th, on the Trend Studios label, ref. no: A060902. It will be on sale in the Republic of Ireland only. The CD should be available from all major record retailers in Ireland from September 6th and it is a limited edition CD of only 10,000 copies. Besides Gary Moore artists and tracks featured on this CD include Bob Geldof, U2, Van Morrison, The Cranberries, Chris de Burgh, Sinead O'Connor, The Corrs, Ash, Clannad and many others. Thin Lizzy fans might wanna check out the CD cover as the sleeve design was donated by the renowned Celtic artist Jim Fitzpatrick who has done several Thin Lizzy covers in the past.

Moore is also to appear on a John Lee Hooker tribute CD. The title will be From Clarksdale to Heaven - Remembering John Lee Hooker and the release date is set to September 24th, on Bluestorm Music. Gary Moore appears on two tracks (I'm In The Mood and Serve Me Right To Suffer) together with Jack Bruce and Gary Husband. Other artists on the CD are Jeff Beck, Gary Brooker/Andy Fairweather-Low, Mick Taylor/Max Middleton, Peter Green Splinter Group and many more.

Eric Bell
The Barrelhouse Brothers' CD Pick It Up, Pass It On will be released in October. The lineup consists of legendary rock musicians, and includes Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy, lead guitar), Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix Experience, bass), Corky Laing (Mountain, drums), Colin Earl (Mungo Jerry/Foghat, boogie piano), John Coughlan (Status Quo, drums) and several others. You can find out more details about it and also how to order a copy of the brand new Eric Bell Band CD A Blues Night In Dublin at Eric Bell's official web site: web.jet.es/banshee.

Snowy White
White has been busy the last year touring the world with Roger Waters. Still, he found time to record a new CD, Restless, recently released under the name Snowy White and The White Flames.

New Thin Lizzy Books Due Out Soon
Everything is finally set for the release of Alan Byrne's book. SAF/Firefly are the publishers. Release date set for March/Apr 2003. It will be issued primarily as a hardback in the price range of about £20. It will be backed with a hectic promotional campaign. Any photograps that supporters wish to send in the meantime can be posted to the address below. Alan will need clearance from anyone who wants to send in a photo for copyright reasons, that is if they are chosen for the final draft of the book!

A new Thin Lizzy biography is being commissioned by SAF and Firefly, the UK's biggest specialist rock publishers. They have asked Paul Stump, author of several books on rock music, to write this piece. According to Paul it's going to be a compendium of all known gigs, techie details etc, ie a completist's guide. Paul states: "My commission is to tell the story of the rest of the band as much as Phil's- which has already been told pretty well- and concentrate on the music and the activities of the band and the individual musicians. An A to Z that is both quirky and comprehensive. This way we might get a new angle on Lizzy."

ACTOR ANNOUNCED TO PLAY PHILIP LYNOTT
9th June 2002

The actor to play Philip Lynott in the forthcoming movie of his and his mothers life story, My Boy, has been announced. It is to be American actor Gary Dourdan, who is currently appearing in the Channel 5 series C.S.I (Crime Scene Investigation).
